A garden for children and adults

A garden for a young family

This cottage, built over several periods, is to have a major renovation in 2012, to include a two-storey extension in glass and oak.

The garden design has to accommodate changing levels with a sunken area near to the house, sufficient terrace space for extensive entertaining and leave plenty of lawned space for children's play.

Terraces on two levels provide dining and casual seating areas, with scented ornamental planting surrounding the sitting areas and arrival area.  This 'adult zone' is to be insulated from the lawn area by blocks of evergreen hedging and robust perennial planting - this should protect the terraces from stray footballs to some degree!

Level access from indoors to out requires careful consideration of the drainage of the site, and the brick steps will need careful construction in order to provide the sharp detailing this garden requires.  A path to the shed future-proofs the garden: in due course it can provide the axis for a productive vegetable garden.
